What is Composition?

What is Composition?- Arrangement of visual elements within the frame of a photograph.

What is it important to understand & utilize composition in photography?- It's important to utilize composition in photography because you need to understand the line. Pay attention to the lines around you, like roads, paths, sunlight, either straight or diagonal. They create a natural focal point and it is often easier to compose photos This works well especially for landscape photography. Texture, shape; all of those elements combine to make a specific effect. You have to do the frame correctly, it creates a focal point for the viewer, but it also fills up extra space that can be distracting or boring (like a blank sky).  Also avoid centering and rule of thirds.

Describe aspects of a “snapshot”.- A snapshot is a casual record of some event or person or object. When you look at the snapshot, you look at the memory. Snapshot's create memories so that's why you take them.

Describe aspects of a “photograph”.- A photograph is an artistic interpretation of an event or person or object. It's purpose is too tell the viewer something about its subject. It shouldn't show what the subject is, but what is it like. A photograph must be composed, all of the elements must be selected and arranged to work together.

Photography is the art of DISCOVERY

What interests me about this is learning to know the difference between a snapshot and a photograph. I want to know how to take a picture of a snapshot and a photograph and see the differences between them so i know which one is which and why.

Camera Basics Quiz

GROUP A

Iso: 800
Shutter Speed: 1/30th
Aperture: 4.5
I shot this picture by using the settings of Manual mode and in manual mode i had to choose a shutter speed and aperture manually. In this picture i needed a small depth of field so i used a low aperture. I needed to take a picture of him with a good amount of light showing so i used ISO 800 so light can pass through the camera.

Iso: 3200
Shutter Speed: 1/200th
Aperture: 4.5
I needed to take a picture of my friend moving or jumping but i needed to get a pic of him in the air without any blur in the picture. In order to get that done i needed to change the shutter speed so i went to manual mode. In manual mode i used 1/200th shutter speed so it can freeze the picture and not produce any blur. With a high shutter speed you need a high ISO so i changed it to 3200 so a lot of light can come through the camera.

Iso: 400
Shutter Speed: 1/13th
Aperture: 15.0
I needed to take a picture without any grainy in the picture so in order to do that i needed a low iso. So i used manual mode so i can manually change the ISO, white balance, Shutter Speed and Aperture. In order not to get grain in my picture i needed a low ISO so i changed it to 400 and i needed a high aperture so i changed it to 15.0.

Iso: 3200
Shutter Speed: 1/30th
Aperture: 13.0
In order to take a blurred motion selfie using the the timer and shutter time priority value. In order to get a blurred picture i red a low shutter speed but a high ISO. You also need a decent aperture, which mine was 13.0 so a good amount of light can come through.

4E) Throughout this unit i learned things I've never knew about taking a good picture. I learned 3 things you need in order to take a good picture, and that is Iso, Aperture, and Shutter Speed. There is many things you need to take a nice, frozen picture. You would need to change your settings to a low aperture with the iso at 800 and the shutter speed at 1/60th of a second. I also learned how to make a custom white balance shot using the light meter. I also learned how to put a timer on the camera so i can get in the picture.

Understanding White Balance

Auto
Iso-800
F/Stop- 5.0
Shutter Speed- 1/60

Daylight
Iso-800
F/Stop- 5.0
Shutter speed- 1/60

Cloudy
Iso 800
F/Stop- 5.0
Shutter Speed- 1/60

Tungsten
Iso 800
F/Stop- 5.0
Shutter Speed- 1/60

Fluorescent
Iso 800
F/Stop-5.0
Shutter Speed- 1/60

Custom
Iso 800
F/Stop- 5.0
Shutter Speed- 1/40

Di) White balance (WB) is the process of removing unrealistic color casts, so that objects which appear white in person are rendered white in your photo. Proper camera white balance has to take into account the "color temperature" of a light source, which refers to the relative warmth or coolness of white light.

Dii) It is important to set your white balance because the white balance adjusts the color in the room, it alines with that, it makes more white show up in your picture.

Understanding Shutter Speeds

For this photograph i used f/11.0 with the iso at 1600. I also took the picture at 1/60th of a second in order to make the photograph blurry. The reason why the photograph came out blurry is because i used a slow shutter speed so more motion is aloud in the picture.

For this photograph i used f/4.5 with the iso at 1600. I also took the picture at 1/500th of a second in order to make the picture clear while moving. The picture came out really clear and frozen. The reason for that is because i used a high shutter speed so less motion can be put into the picture making it clear.

Di) Shutter speed is the time for which a shutter is open at a given setting, slow shutter speed means blurry subject and high shutter speed means frozen/clear subject.

Dii) The way Shutter speed works technically in camera is the higher shutter speed, the less blurry the picture is, if you have a high shutter speed you have to have a low f/stop and have a high iso. If you want to have a blurry photo you need a high f//stop with the shutter speed being lower than 1/60th of a second and the iso can be the same.

Understanding Iso

F/3.5
Shutter speed 0.6"
Iso 100
This picture came out more grainy compared to the highest of 3200.

F/3.5
Shutter Speed 1/25"
Iso 3200
This picture came out more speckled compared to iso 100.

Di) ISO is the level of sensitivity of your camera to available light. The lower the ISO number, the less sensitive it is to the light, while a higher ISO number increases the sensitivity of your camera.

Dii) Works technically by allowing the light being more or less sensitive to light. If you were low iso you would have a low aperture and a lower shutter speed . If you were high Iso, you would need a higher aperture and a faster shutter speed. Works visually because it picks up light easily so you would need a narrow aperture. If it doesn't pick up light easily you will need a wide aperture.

Diii) Iso is the light sensitivity of your camera, the lower iso the less sensitive, the higher iso the more sensitive it is, so if you have a high iso, you would need a higher aperture and a faster shutter speed. If you were a low iso, you would need a lower aperture and a slow shutter speed. That how it relates to the exposure triangle.

Understanding Aperture

For this picture i used f/5.0 with 1/60 of a second also with iso 800. This picture  used the smallest f stop possible this camera can go. This picture gave me a small depth of field where the image thats being focused is really clear and in the background it is blurry, making the image being focused clear.

For this picture i used f/22.0 with 0.3 and the iso at 800. This picture used the highest f/stop my camera could use and it gave me a large depth of field, making the whole image visible in the front and back. Not like the small f/stop where the background is blurred out.

Di) Aperture is a space in which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument, especially the variable opening by which light enters a camera.

Dii) It opens wide and squeezes/forces light through a narrower opening creating focus. Works visually by creating a blur, and need lens to focus on the object, when narrow, creates infinite depth of focus.

Diii) Aperture is the opening of the light goes through, shutter speed controls how long the light passes through, and the iso it is how sensitive the light opening is.

Photographic Themes

What i believe this photograph project was assigned to us is to see what we see when we take a picture of calm, angry, terrifying, etc. I believe there is no wrong answer in this project because everyone has a different view in life. Some pictures i liked the most is the 5th row first one which is a basketball and my caption for that was compassion. I have compassion for playing basketball because i practice 2 hours mostly everyday and try to improve my basketball skills so i can try to get a scholarship. Another one i mostly liked taking was 3rd row second one which is a picture of all my shoes i had. I captioned that as growth because i started a sneaker collection 2 years ago but these sneakers are rare and cost a lot of money so its hard to get more shoes because the prices for them are through the roof. The last one i liked the most is 4th row 1st picture is the Quran which is the bible in muslim. I captioned that as love because i love the Quran because I'm muslim so its like a christian liking the bible. I believe that all these pictures i took are good captions of what the project assigned.
